“A display of the transformative power club culture can have” - Clash

Grove is a Bristol-based vocalist, producer and DJ. Their music combines ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ energies that reside within them as a genderqueer individual, filtering them through an innovative, sensuous & rave-inspired sound. They have previously provided a guest mix for object blue as well as playing at legendary London LQBTQ+ space, Dalston Superstore & locations from Glasgow, to Sheffield, to Bristol. Grove is proud to release their new EP Queer + Black via Memorials of Distinction/Spinny Nights. Queer + Black is an exploration of identity, both personal and political, it is a deft combination of sharp hooks and splintering beats beamed in from a club in 3021 AD.

On the EP, Grove says, “Queer + Black serves as an introduction to my experience of the world. Tunes to get sweaty in the dance to, as well as contemplate sexuality, class + race.
The EP was definitely shaped by my experience in Bristol sonically - I was making soul/hip-hop/UKG tunes before, now somehow found myself making dutty breakbeats & electronic, punk-infused sounds.
Q+B will be the first in a genre-hopping suite of releases, genreless is how we do.The range of influences for the tracks span from the power felt in decolonising our spaces (with the toppling of the Edward Colston statue), to the feeling of euphoria during a rave for queer people of colour, to calling for a focus on how landlordism + classism is keeping inequality rife in society. All soundtracked by dark dance, hip-hop and dancehall-infused beats that I've produced. It's been a long road finding a sense of self-acceptance, but this EP marks a point where I'm comfortable and proud in my identity + beliefs and would like to share my perspective of that with others.”

Building on the breaks-laden, angsty high-tempo of the breakthrough debut 'Queer + Black', the follow-up mixtape SPICE marks an experimentation of fusing dancehall punk, dub + hip-hop with future-facing dancefloor styles. Born out of the collective mind of some of Bristol's most twisted artists, Grove drafts in additional production credits from YOKEL (Slack Alice, Avon Terror Corps) and Robin Stewart (Giant Swan). "This mixtape is an ode to the exciting and lust-filled period of new relationships, and explores everything from steezy self-confidence, to slippery sensual encounters and the soft cheeks of a lover. Delving into the beauty of production that is firmly rooted in both Jamaican and British culture has been a great process of personal growth. Being a person of dual-heritage, the dancehall and dub elements are the Jamaican spice, mixed with the undeniable influence that Bristol has had in terms of sonic darkness and experimentation."
