THANK YOU: Results of the Campaign "Support Refugees with Fluff Fest"

Pravděpodobně jste zaznamenali, že se letošní ročník Fluff Festu vzhledem k situaci kolem COVID-19 nekonal. Místo organizování festivalu jsme se rozhodli podpořit grass-root organizace a nezávislé dobrovolníky pomáhající uprchlíkům na Balkáně a v Řecku. Skrze spolek Pomáháme lidem na útěku jsme spustili na darujeme.cz kampaň s názvem "Pomoc uprchlíkům s Fluff Festem 2020 / Support Refugees with Fluff Fest 2020", která běžela od konce dubna do původně plánovaného Fluff víkendu v červenci. Všem, kdo do sbírky přispěli nebo jí věnovali svou energii, velmi děkujeme.

 

• Celkem se vybralo 102 136 Kč (= 3,895 EUR) od 134 lidí

Níže si můžete přečíst shrnutí od spolku Pomáháme lidem na útěku, kam všude bude finanční pomoc směřována.

 

NA CO PENÍZE POUŽIJEME?:

Z vybraných peněz chceme podpořit tři konkrétní aktivity:

1. Aktuální a urgentní pomoc uprchlíkům v bosenském kantonu Una-Sana

Na severu Bosny je momentálně velmi kritická situace, zhoršuje se už několik let. Místní obyvatelstvo je deprimováno evropskou "externalizací problému migrace" - tedy plošného vytlačování migrantů do jejich měst. Vede to ke značnému napětí mezi místními, uprchlíky a policií. V posledních dnech jsou uprchlíci odchytávání policií prakticky všude, na ulicích, squatech, v kostelích i mešitách a odváženi na hranice kantonu, do “území nikoho” na hranici mezi bosenskou federaci a území Republiky Srpska u města Bosanska Otoka. Je to území na hranici dvou správních celků Bosny a Hercegoviny, kde fakticky nemá dosah žádná policejní moc. Migranti tam zůstávají bez vody, jídla, oblečení, bez telefonů, které jim policie při převozu zabaví - nemohou tedy ani dát vědět rodině, že jsou stále naživu. Minulý týden jich tam takto bylo zhruba 600, předpokládáme, že číslo se bude zvyšovat, v tuto chvíli už je to pravděpodobně více, přesná čísla nikdo nezná. 

Na severu Bosny jsme pracovali v letech 2018 a částečně 2019, situaci dobře známe a máme napojení na dobrovolníky, kteří na místě pracují soustavně. Víme tedy, na koho se obrátit, skrze koho distribuovat pomoc a kde získat informace o tom, co je potřeba. 

• Nakoupili jsme základní potraviny cca na týden, spacáky a deky, které distribuujeme ve spolupráci s místní koordinátorkou Červeného kříže Sanellou, která v oblasti působí dlouhodobě a je hlavní organizátorkou pomoci pro lidi, kteří se ocitli zcela mimo systém. 

• Nakoupíme léky, dezinfekce a repelenty - tedy to, po čem se migranti nejvíce ptají hned poté, co dostanou najíst a něco na sebe. Sedí na poli celý den a repelent se může zdát jako zbytečnost, ale opravdu je potřeba, pokud nemáte vůbec kam jít. Stejně tak třeba krémy proti spálení od sluníčka. Tyhle věci lze navíc špatně dovážet ze sbírek (například u oblečení je to jednodušší). Léky a zdravotnický materiál je mnohem jednodušší koupit na místě, proto bychom rádi použili peníze ze sbírky. 

• Na tuto urgentní humanitární pomoc potřebujeme cca 1300 EUR. 

 

2. Dlouhodobý projekt komunitního centra pro uprchlíky v Sarajevu - peníze využijeme během podzimu

V Sarajevu působíme od roku 2019, během loňského roku jsme postupně vybudovali komunitní centrum, na kterém spolupracujeme s dalšími organizacemi a místními dobrovolníky. Centrum poskytuje migrantům hygienické zázemí, internet, možnost vyprat si oblečení a taky možnost cítit se na chvíli bezpečně a důstojně. Jeho cílovou skupinou jsou uprchlíci kteří žijí v táborech, ale i ti, kteří žijí mimo ně, ve squatech nebo ulici. Obecně cílíme naše služby hlavně na mladé muže, o kterých se v médiích často mluví negativně a také na ně směřuje narozdíl od dětí a žen mnohem méně pomoci. V srpnu 2020 jsme museli provoz centra na čas přerušit kvůli komplikacím spojeným s přetrvávajícími opatřeními proti pandemii COVID19 - pravidla cestování na Balkán jsou stále velmi nejasná a my nedokážeme dobrovolníkům zajistit, že se dostanou na místo, že nebudou muset do karantény a že se v pořádku pak dostanou zpátky domů. Takže máme nyní zavřeno, ale víme, že situace pro lidi na ulici se opět zhorší na podzim, až se zhorší počasí - takže pracujeme na tom, abychom v říjnu mohli znovu otevřít, byť pravděpodobně v menším prostoru a s menším počtem dobrovolníků na místě. Dalších cca 1500 EUR bychom si tedy rádi nechali na účtě a využili je k zaplacení nájmu a k nutným nákladům, které přijdou v říjnu se znovuotevřením centra (energie, vybavení, provoz sprch atd, benzín, atd). 

 

3. Podpora projektu ReFOCUS, kteří na řeckém ostrově Lesbos provozuje náš spřátelený dobrovolnický tým. 

Zbylé peníze (cca 1000 Eur) pošleme organizaci ReFOCUS, která dlouhodobě působí na ostrově Lesbos a zaměřuje se na podporu seberealizace uprchlíků. Nabízí jim mediální workshopy, učí je pracovat s médii a poskytuje jim prostor, aby mohli sami a svým hlasem vyprávět svoje příběhy.  Nejedná se tedy o přímou humanitární pomoc, ale dlouhodobější projekt, který pracuje s lidmi, kteří v Řecku už nějakou dobu jsou a jejich naděje na změnu situace je mizivá. ReFOCUS jim dává možnost smysluplně využít čas a upozornit na vlastní situaci zbytek světa - a ne tak, aby někdo mluvil za ně, ale aby mohli o svých příbězích mluvit sami. 

Mezi aktivity ReFOCUSu patří:  

• Krátkodobé i dlouhodobé workshopy a kurzy pro uprchlíky v táborech Moria a Kara Tepe a v hlavním měste Mytiléné - fotografie, film, práce s Adobe photoshop, základní grafické dovednosti, storytelling. 

• Propojování uprchlíků s novináři a publikace příběhů uprchlíků

• Zprostředkování online stáží pro uprchlíky v různých světových médiích jako BBC nebo Bloomberg.

• Produkce a podpora rozvoje dokumentárních filmů o situaci uprchlíků na řeckých ostrovech a podpora distribuce těchto filmů tak, aby se dostaly k co nejvíce lidem (skrze filmové festivaly atd.). 

 

Na co budou použity peníze z kampaně:  

Původně měli být peníze použity na nákup licence na Adobe a další editorské a grafické programy, nákup technického vybavení (kamery a fotoaparáty) a nákup paměťových karet a USB zařízení, které by si uprchlíci mohli nechat a mít tak možnost prezentovat svojí práci.

❗Vše se ale změnilo: První zářijový týden se situace na Lesbu vyhrotila - shořel tábor Moria, příčina požáru zatím není známa, ale jisté je, že z 13 tisíc obyvatel jich nyní 11 a půl tisíce nemá střechu nad hlavou. Shořely také kanceláře, veškerá infrastruktura a zázemí. Police vyhlásila okolo tábora šestikilometrové "ochranné" pásmo, do kterého nechce nikoho pustit. ReFOCUS pracuje na Lesbu už léta, proto dobře zná místní situaci a ví, jak dostat urgentní humanitární pomoc přímo k lidem, kteří nyní spí u silnice a nemají vůbec kam jít. Přerušují proto své aktivity a peníze ze sbírky použijí na akutní potřeby jako je jídlo, pitná voda, deky a spacáky, léky, dezinfekce.

As you probably noted, we were not able to organize this year's Fluff Fest due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, we decided to support grass-roots organisations and independent volunteers helping refugees in the Balkans and Greece. We launched through the Czech initiative "Pomáháme lidem na útěku" (Czech Refugee Help) a fundraising campaign called Support Refugees with Fluff Fest 2020 which was running from the end of April till the initially planned Fluff weekend in July. We would like to huge enormous THANK YOU to everyone who contributed to the campaign.

 

• In total, CZK 102 136 (EUR 3,895) was raised - donated by 134 people

We in the organization "Pomáháme lidem na útěku" (Czech Refugee Help") want to support three specific activities with the money raised:

 

1. Current and urgent aid for refugees in Bosnia’s Una-Sana Canton

The situation in the north of Bosnia has been getting worse for several years, and is currently extremely precarious. The local population is dispirited by Europe’s “externalisation of the migration problem” – i.e. the widespread expulsion of migrants to their towns and cities. It has led to considerable tension between locals, refugees and the police. In recent days, the refugees have been captured by police almost everywhere – on the streets, in squats, churches and mosques, and taken to the borders of the canton, to “no-man’s land” on the border between Bosnia and Serbia near the village of Bosanska Otoka. It is an area on the border of two administrative units in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where no police force has much effect. The migrants are left there with no water, food or clothing and no mobile phones, which have been confiscated by the police on the way – so they cannot even let their families know that they are still alive. Last week, there were around 600 people there. We predict that the number is going to increase. It is probably more than that already, but nobody knows the exact number.

We worked in the north of Bosnia in 2018 and for some of 2019, we know the situation well and have links with the volunteers who have been working there continuously, so we know who to speak to, who we should distribute aid through and where to get information about what is needed.

• We have bought approximately a week’s worth of basic food, sleeping bags and blankets, which we are distributing in collaboration with the local Red Cross coordinator, Sanella, who has been working in the area for a long time and is the main organiser of aid for people who have found themselves completely out of the system.

• We are going to buy medicines, sanitisers and repellents – basically the first thing migrants ask for once they have been given food and clothing. They are sitting in a field all day long, so repellent may seem frivolous but you really need it when you have nowhere to go. The same goes for things like sunscreen. These items can be hard to get from collections (clothes, for example, are easier). Medicines and medical supplies are far easier to buy locally, that is why we would like to use the money collected for these items.

• We need around EUR 1300 for this urgent humanitarian aid.

 

2. Long-term community centre project for refugees in Sarajevo – we will be using the money in the autumn

We have been active in Sarajevo since 2019. Last year we gradually established the community centre in which we work with other organisations and local volunteers. The centre provides migrants with sanitary facilities, internet, the opportunity to wash clothes and also a chance to feel safe and dignified for a while. It is aimed both at refugees living in camps and those who live in squats or on the streets. In general, we target our services at young men who are often spoken of negatively in the media, and who also get far less help compared with children and women. In August 2020, we had to close the centre for a while due to complications linked to COVID-19 measures – the rules for travel to the Balkans are still very unclear and we cannot ensure that volunteers will reach their destination, that they will not have to go into quarantine, or that they will get back home OK. So we are currently shut but we know that the situation for people on the streets will get worse again in autumn, when the weather gets worse – so we are working on being able to open again in October, although probably in smaller premises with fewer volunteers on site. We would therefore like to keep around EUR 1500 in the bank to use for paying rent and the essential costs that will come with reopening the centre in October (energy, equipment, operating showers, petrol, etc.).

 

3. Support for the ReFOCUS project, run on the Greek island of Lesbos by our friendly team of volunteers.

We will send the rest of the money (around EUR 1000) to the ReFOCUS organisation, which has long been active on Lesbos and focuses on supporting refugees’ self-realisation. They offer media workshops, teach them to work with the media, and provide space for them to tell their stories in their own voice. This is not direct humanitarian aid, per se, but a longer-term project working with people who have already been in Greece for a while and whose hopes of changing the situation are slim. ReFOCUS gives them an opportunity to make meaningful use of their time and tell the rest of the world about their personal situation – not with someone speaking on their behalf but so they can tell their stories themselves.

ReFOCUS activities include:

 

• Short-term and long-term workshops and courses for refugees in the Moria and Kara Tepe camps and the capital, Mytilene – photography, film, work with Adobe Photoshop, basic graphic skills, and storytelling.

• Connecting refugees with journalists and publication of refugees’ stories.

• Arranging online internships for refugees with various world media organisations such as the BBC or Bloomberg.

• Production and support for the development of documentary films about the situation of refugees on the Greek islands and support for distribution of these films so they reach as many people as possible (through film festivals, etc.)

 

The money from the campaign was supposed to be used for buying licences for Adobe and other editing and graphics programs, buying technical equipment – video cameras, still cameras, and buying memory cards and USB devices the refugees can keep and therefore have the opportunity to present their work.

❗ However, the situation has changed dramatically. The first week of September the situation on the island of Lesbos escalated with a massive fire at Moria - the island's largest refugee camp. The fire completely destroyed the site, including all the infrastructure, offices and support centers. The cause of the fire is yet to be investigated, but it is already clear that out 13 thousand of camp residents more than 11 thousand people had to flee and are now left homeless and without almost any support. Police declared a six kilometre “protective” zone around the camp where no one is allowed in. ReFOCUS have been active on the island for the past two years, and are therefore familiar with the situation and able to help channel critically needed humanitarian aid to the people who are now forced to sleep by the roads and have nowhere to go. ReFOCUS have suspended for now their educational activities and all the money they obtained from the campaign will be used for food, drinking water, blankets and sleeping bags, medical supplies and disinfectants.
